As collectors and enthusiasts, we rarely see the special projects that Tutima had undertaken for the military. The watches were delivered directly to the units of the armed forces. The only chance we get to see them are when they occasionally pop up for sale. We’ve done some reconnaissance and prepared an imagery intelligence report on some of Tutima’s early models and the organizations they went to.
We received the Tempest Commodore watches to give them a spin. I have to state that when of the review, the watches were not finalized yet. However, no big changes were to be expected, only small tweaks to ensure a high quality finish.
Aqua Terra: As Danny Milton wrote in his introduction to the Seamaster Aqua Terra Tokyo 2020, Omega saved the shiniest for last after releasing a considerable output of commemorative watches for Tokyo 2020. The solid gold watch comes in a 38mm and 41mm version with a blue leather strap and features a striking blue dial, playing off the Tokyo 2020 emblem.
Similar to Rolex, Tudor rolls things out slowly. The original Black Bay Chrono was a splashy release back in 2017. If there were complaints about that watch, they were certainly centered on the thickness (it did, after all, measure a rather tall 14.9mm in case height).
For volume 13 we gathered our talented editorial team along with some very clever contributors and worked tirelessly in the run-up to provide you with a volume we're immensely proud of. Not to boast, but we think it looks pretty epic.
Will this be a practical diver for people that actually dive frequently? Probably not. I'm curious to get my hands on one and feel if the internal rotating dial clicks are substantial and not prone to bumps unlike many inner rotating bezels, but the quick legibility of the indices seems like it might be a problem – something you don't want to worry about if you're nervous about your oxygen supply or time left underwater. But that's probably okay – I still need to pick up a dive computer anyway.
We see concealed watches from almost every brand you can think of in this era – think Cartier, Patek Philippe, Rolex, and so on. Cartier even extended the idea to men's watches with the Tank Obus Savonnette and there is an argument to be made that Jaeger LeCoultre's Reverso, especially in smaller sizes, is a hidden watch for daily wear.
Firstly, its 46mm diameter and 15mm thick case is machined in Ceratanium®, a new material which, resulting from the marriage of titanium and ceramic, is ultra-light, robust, resistant and virtually scratchproof.
My watch obsessions come and go in waves. One of those minor obsessions has been De Bethune, with a very futuristic horological design and incredible metallurgical skills that make it hard to ignore, even if, for a long time, it felt outside my comfort zone because of how bold the brand was. Regardless, I've always watched from the corner of my eye, warming up to the watches and secretly wishing I'd someday be bold enough to wear a big blue titanium watch on my wrist.
But one critical, not-to-be overlooked point is that Grand Seiko hasn't shown any sign of leaving many of the fan-favorite affordable pieces behind. If you want an SBGM221 like mine, you can have it, and it will still run you just $4,600 – for my money (literally) one of the best deals there is in watchmaking. Another affordable fan favorite is the SGW231, a super-simple hand-winder that summons all of the characteristic elegance of Grand Seiko for just $4,300.
The Offshore is still waiting patiently on the sidelines for its wider re-entrance into the pop-culture sphere. Which makes right now an ideal time for collectors to jump in before prices inevitably skyrocket.
What are you the best at? Tough question, but in watch photography, I think I'm the best at exploring the details of any watch that is in front of me in a way that captures what makes the watch interesting and fun. People always ask what watch has been my favorite to photograph and I always say that it's whatever watch is in front of me and my camera.
